Alone among Mozart’s six piano sonatas of –5, the Sonata in E flat major, K, opens with an Adagio rather than the usual Allegro. This exquisite movement seems to mingle the lyrical suavity of J C Bach with the Empfindsamkeit, or ‘heightened sensibility’, of his elder half-brother Carl Philipp Emanuel.
